Most conversations that start with “I have an app idea” arrive at the same two questions: how much, and how long? Here’s what actually determines both.
Do You Really Need an App?
An app is a strong investment when customers buy from you frequently, book appointments, or hold memberships — because its superpower is the push notification, the cheapest way to bring a customer back. If your customers interact with you once or twice a year, a great mobile-friendly website plus SEO usually returns more.
The Process
Five stages: analysis and scoping (the foundation of any honest quote), UI/UX design, development — ideally cross-platform, one codebase running on both Android and iOS, cutting cost and time nearly in half — testing and store publication, then ongoing maintenance. An unmaintained app decays within a year.
What Drives the Cost
Screen and feature count, user accounts and payments, integrations with your existing systems, notification and loyalty infrastructure, the admin panel behind the app, and design depth. An MVP approach — launching with core features first — shrinks both cost and risk; most successful apps started that way. Typical timelines: 6–8 weeks for an MVP, 2–4 months for standard apps.
Five Questions for Any Vendor
Who owns the source code and store accounts? (The answer must be: you.) Can I see apps you’ve published? What are the maintenance terms? Does one project cover both platforms? What’s your response time when something breaks after launch?
