Every search containing a city name or “near me” triggers the map pack — three businesses shown above the classic results. For local companies, appearing there often drives more phone calls than ranking first organically. Here’s how to get in, and it’s entirely free.
What Decides Map Rankings
Google weighs three factors: relevance (how well your profile matches the search — categories and description matter most), distance (which you can’t change), and prominence (your online reputation — review count, rating, website strength and mentions). Two of the three are fully in your control.
The Essentials
Claim and verify your profile at business.google.com — unverified profiles don’t rank. Fill in everything: primary category (the single most important field), services, hours, description. Keep your name, address and phone identical to your website, letter for letter. Upload real photos of your team and work, and post updates regularly — an active profile signals a living business.
Reviews: The Strongest Lever
Review count, rating and content all count — a review that mentions your service (“they built our website”) helps more than a plain “thanks”. Ask every happy customer at the moment of delivery, make it easy with a direct link or QR code, and reply to every review, positive or negative. Never buy fake reviews; suspension is the likely outcome.
Connect It to Your Website
Map rankings feed on your site’s strength: address and phone in every footer, an embedded map on the contact page, local content and LocalBusiness structured data all lift both rankings together.
